Involving Grandparents in Baby Care Without Losing Control of Your Routine
Grandparents are invaluable. They are also sometimes convinced that your baby's routine is optional. Here's how to involve extended family while keeping the schedule your baby depends on.

The Dynamic Nobody Tells You About
Grandparents raised children. They raised them successfully. They may also have raised children 30 years ago, when safe sleep guidelines were different, when baby schedules were less understood. The tension between grandparent intuition and evidence-based routine is one of the most common conflicts in new parent families — and almost entirely predictable and manageable if you approach it right.
The Approach That Actually Works
Frame It as "What Works for This Baby"
Rather than presenting the routine as objectively correct for all babies, present it as what works for yours. "She specifically gets overtired if she's awake more than 90 minutes — she's just wired that way" is much easier to accept than a parenting philosophy debate.
Give Specific, Actionable Instructions
"Keep her on her schedule" is too abstract. "She last ate at 11. She'll be hungry around 2. She's been awake since 12:30, so she'll likely need a nap before then — these are the signs she's getting tired..." is actionable. The more specific the instruction, the more likely it is to be followed.
Use the Tracking Log as a Resource
A shared tracking app gives grandparents visibility into what's happened recently without requiring them to guess or ask. Show them how to log a feed — keep it simple: time, amount. This also gives them a sense of participation rather than just being monitored.
Pick Your Battles
Safe sleep guidelines are non-negotiable. Nap timing is very important. The exact order of the bedtime routine is probably negotiable. Having a clear internal hierarchy of what matters vs. what's just preference helps you decide where to hold firm and where to let grandparents do it their way.
