Tracking Your Baby When Grandparents Are Babysitting — How to Stay in the Loop
Grandparents are wonderful caregivers. They are not always wonderful at keeping records. Here's how to stay informed about your baby's feeds, naps, and needs — even when you're not there.

Grandparents Love Your Baby. They Do Not Always Love Apps.
Leaving your baby with grandparents is often the first major separation. It is also the moment you realize your meticulous tracking system is about to be handed to someone who considers "the baby ate a bit and slept a while" to be sufficient documentation. The gap between "a bit" and "3.5 ounces at 11:40am" is real when you return and need to know when to offer the next feed.
The Grandparent Onboarding Conversation
Walk through before the session: wake windows ("after she's been awake 90 minutes, she'll start getting sleepy"), feed timing ("her last feed was at X, she'll likely be hungry around Y"), how to use the tracking app (keep it simple — show them one action), and emergency escalation criteria.
The Low-Friction Approach
If the tracking app is too much friction, use a paper template instead. A simple sheet with time, feed/nap, and notes columns is better than no record at all. You can enter it into the app when you return. Luvu Family allows multiple caregivers on the same account — if your grandparent is comfortable with a smartphone, they can log directly and you see updates in real time.
When You Return
Even with perfect records, spend 5 minutes on a verbal debrief. "How did she seem? Was she fussy? Anything unusual?" The tracking log tells you the what. The caregiver tells you the how — the tone of the afternoon, the things that don't fit neatly into a log field. Both matter.
