How We Divided Night Shifts Using a Baby Tracking App
The most common source of parental conflict in the newborn phase is not the baby — it's the negotiation over who gets up at 3am. Here's how tracking data turned our chaos into an actual system.

The Night Shift Problem
Before the baby, we considered ourselves a functioning team. After the baby, we spent three weeks in a low-grade negotiation over who was more tired, whose turn it was, and whether the previous feed had been 90 minutes ago or 2.5 hours. The problem is not love or commitment — it is information. Without a clear record, every 3am handoff involves negotiating from complete uncertainty.
The System We Built
- Partner A: takes overnight feeds from bedtime (7pm) to 1am
- Partner B: takes overnight feeds from 1am to wake-up (~6am)
- Whoever feeds logs the feed. No negotiation. Log it.
- The first person awake reviews the log before assuming anything about who's more tired.
We adjusted the split based on data — our baby cluster-fed from 9pm to midnight, making my partner's shift harder, so we shifted the handoff to midnight.
What the Data Changed
The argument "I'm more tired, I did more feeds" is impossible to win without data. With data it becomes: "You did 3 feeds last night, I did 2" — a statement of fact rather than a feeling. Feelings about nighttime are unreliable. Sleep deprivation distorts everything. The log doesn't.
The Rule That Made It Work
The person not on shift does not get woken up unless there is an emergency. This requires trusting the system. The system works because you can verify it. That verifiability creates the trust that lets you actually sleep during your off-shift.
