What to Do When Your Baby's Schedule Completely Falls Apart
Travel, illness, a developmental leap, a holiday visit — something breaks the routine. Here's how to recover without a complete reset.

It Will Happen. Probably This Week.
You built the routine. It was working. Then: travel. Or illness. Or a family visit that disrupted everything. The schedule is gone. Now what?
Why Disruptions Hit Hard
Babies rely on predictability for sleep regulation. Their developing nervous systems use routine — the same sequence of events, the same environmental cues — to downregulate for sleep. When those cues disappear, sleep often suffers disproportionately. Even one night of disrupted sleep from a trip or illness can take several days to recover from.
The Recovery Plan
Step 1: Don't panic or overcompensate. An overtired, off-rhythm baby won't respond well to forcing wake times that don't match their current state. Meet them where they are.
Step 2: Return to anchor points. Start with two: morning wake time and bedtime. A consistent morning wake time is the single most powerful reset tool for circadian rhythm disruption.
Step 3: Watch wake windows, not clock times. Offer sleep at the appropriate wake window, regardless of whether it's the "right" time on the schedule.
Step 4: Give it 3–5 days. Recovery typically takes 3–5 days of consistent effort. If you're tracking, you'll see the gradual trend — that graph line heading back toward your baseline is reassuring on day two when nothing feels like it's working.
When it's illness: let the schedule go entirely. Sick babies need more sleep and more feeds. Rebuild once they're recovered.
