What a Realistic 6-Month-Old Schedule Actually Looks Like

Six months is a milestone: solid foods begin, sleep patterns shift, and your baby is starting to look genuinely like a person. Here's what a real 6-month-old day actually looks like.

What a Realistic 6-Month-Old Schedule Actually Looks Like

Six Months: The First Major Transition

Six months marks a genuine inflection point. This is typically when solid foods begin, when many babies transition from 3 to 2 naps, and when the developmental advances — rolling, sitting with support, reaching and grasping — start to feel like a real skill set. The 6-month sleep regression sometimes appears around this time, related to new motor skills being practiced.

The Biology at 6 Months

  • Wake windows: 2.5–3 hours
  • Total sleep: 12–16 hours per 24 hours
  • Naps: 3 per day (some babies beginning to consolidate to 2)
  • Overnight: Many babies capable of longer stretches; 1 overnight feed common, some sleeping through
  • Solids: Beginning around 6 months — breast or formula remains primary nutrition; solids are supplemental

A Realistic 6-Month-Old Day

  • 6:30–7am: Wake. Milk feed.
  • 7–9:30am: Awake time (2.5 hours). Floor play, tummy time.
  • 9:30–11am: Nap 1 (ideally 1–1.5 hours).
  • 11am: Milk feed. Small solid lunch (1–2 tablespoons of puree).
  • 11am–1:30pm: Awake time.
  • 1:30–3pm: Nap 2 — the most important nap of the day; protect this one.
  • 3pm: Milk feed.
  • 3–5pm: Awake time.
  • 5–5:45pm: Nap 3 (short catnap, 20–30 min — some 6-month-olds beginning to drop this).
  • 6pm: Milk feed. Optional small solid dinner.
  • 7–7:30pm: Bedtime routine. Bath, book, feed, dark room.
  • Overnight: 0–1 feeds for many babies; some still doing 2.

The 3-to-2 Nap Transition

Signs the transition is coming: the third nap is consistently refused or pushed very late; bedtime has been getting later because of the late catnap; the baby fights the third nap but copes well without it. If you're not seeing these signs consistently, keep three naps. Track nap patterns for a week or two in Luvu Family to get clear data on whether the time is right.
