What a Realistic 4-Month-Old Schedule Actually Looks Like
The 4-month sleep regression lands right when you thought things were improving. Here's what the 4-month-old schedule actually looks like — and how to navigate the regression.

Welcome to 4 Months: The Plot Twist
Just when you thought you had it figured out — just when the baby was giving you a 5-hour stretch — the 4-month sleep regression arrives. At 3.5–4 months, infant sleep architecture permanently reorganizes to more closely resemble adult sleep, with lighter and more frequent partial arousals between cycles. This is good for long-term brain development. It is temporarily terrible for everyone's sleep.
The Biology at 4 Months
- Wake windows: 1.5–2.5 hours, building toward 2+ hours
- Total sleep: 12–16 hours per 24 hours
- Naps: 3–4 per day
- New skills: Rolling front-to-back, improved hand control, reaching for objects
A Realistic 4-Month-Old Day
- 6:30–7am: Wake, feed
- 7–9am: Awake time (90–120 min window)
- 9–10am: Nap 1 (often 30–45 min during regression)
- 10–10:30am: Feed
- 10:30am–12:30pm: Awake time
- 12:30–2pm: Nap 2
- 2pm: Feed
- 2–4pm: Awake time
- 4–5pm: Nap 3 (short catnap)
- 7–7:30pm: Bedtime
- Overnight: During regression: may wake every 1–2 hours
What Helps During the 4-Month Regression
- Keep wake windows tight — overtiredness significantly worsens regression symptoms
- Maintain consistent sleep environment: dark room, white noise
- Consider gradually reducing sleep associations
- Track sleep in Luvu Family — seeing "5 wake-ups Friday, 3 Saturday, 2 today" gives the exhausted brain something to hold onto
The regression typically lasts 2–6 weeks. It ends.
